Working With a View: How High-Rise Living Transformed the Way I Work From Home

A high-rise workspace where art, light, and city views come together to support focus and creative flow.
There was a time when I worked from a large, traditional home.
It had everything: space, structure, a fully built office, storage, and quiet. On paper, it was the ideal work-from-home setup. And yet, something was missing.
Today, I live and work in a high-rise condo with a view. And the difference: energetically, creatively, emotionally, has been profound.
This is not an argument against space.
It’s an argument for atmosphere.

The Energy Shift I Didn’t Expect

When people think about productivity, they often focus on square footage, storage, or desk size. I used to think the same way.
My previous home had a dedicated office: walls, doors, and furniture chosen solely for function. It was practical. It was efficient. It was quiet.
But it didn’t energize me.
Now, my desk sits near floor-to-ceiling windows, elevated high above the city. The first thing I see every morning is light, natural, expansive, constantly changing light.
Sunlight in a high-rise doesn’t just enter the room.
It moves through it.
That movement alone changes how you feel when you sit down to work.

Why Natural Light in a High-Rise Feels Different

When the city softens at sunset, working from home feels less like routine and more like ritual.
In high-rise living, light behaves differently. It’s less obstructed. It’s broader. It feels intentional, even when it isn’t.
On bright days, the energy is obvious, clear skies, long shadows, a sense of openness that pulls your focus outward and upward.
But what surprised me most were the other days.
  • Rainy days feel cinematic rather than dull.
  • Snowy days feel quiet, insulated, almost poetic.
  • Even extreme cold looks beautiful from above.
From a high-rise, the weather becomes a visual texture rather than an inconvenience. Right now, when I am drafting this article, I can see beautiful snow outside; it’s magical.
And when you work in a creative field, or build ideas for a living, that matters more than we realize.

Setting Up a Desk With a View (Not Just Near a Window)

Natural light, clean lines, and a skyline view—proof that productivity thrives in beautiful spaces.
I didn’t just place my desk near a window. I designed my work zone around the view.
As many of you know, I often talk about my ultra-wide screen. It shows up throughout my home, not as a tech obsession, but as a design and productivity tool. The wide screen allows me to work expansively without cluttering my desk or my mind.
Paired with the city skyline, the screen doesn’t compete with the view—it grounds it.
This setup does something subtle but powerful:
  • Your eyes alternate naturally between near focus (your work) and far focus (the view)
  • Your posture improves because the space feels open.
  • Mental fatigue decreases because your environment is visually stimulating without being chaotic.
It’s an energy station, not just a desk.

Creativity Thrives Without a Schedule

As a full-time entrepreneur, my work doesn’t run on a strict 9–5 rhythm. Some days I write early. Other days, ideas come late at night. Creativity doesn’t clock in; it arrives when the conditions are right.
High-rise living supports that unpredictability beautifully.
In winter, especially when daylight fades early, I transition my home intentionally around 5:00–5:30 pm. This is where lighting becomes just as important as the view itself.

Nightfall, Layered Lighting, and the City Glow

Working with a view turns even ordinary workdays into something quietly luxurious.
At night, my condo transforms.
I don’t rely on overhead lighting. Instead, I layer lamps, soft glows, and warm accents throughout the space. When the interior lighting is intentional, something magical happens outside.
The city lights respond.
Windows become reflections. Buildings glow. The skyline feels alive but calm.
Sometimes, instead of sitting at my desk, I move to what I call my thought processing corner, a quiet spot designed purely for thinking, reflecting, and writing without pressure.
(If you haven’t read it yet, this idea is explored more deeply in Why Every Home Needs a Thinking Corner—a foundational concept in intentional living.)
Some of my best ideas don’t come from structured work sessions.
They come from sitting quietly, looking out, letting thoughts settle.

Why a High-Rise View Supports Deep Thinking

You’re physically removed from street-level noise, yet visually connected to life moving below. That balance between distance and disconnection is incredibly grounding for creative work.
From above, problems feel smaller.
Decisions feel clearer.
Ideas stretch further.
This is one of the most underrated benefits of vertical living: it supports mental spaciousness, even when square footage is modest.
For anyone working from home, especially entrepreneurs, writers, designers, or strategists, this matters deeply.

Traditional Space vs. Intentional Atmosphere

As night falls, layered lighting and city glow create a space made for deep focus and ideas.
Looking back, my previous home gave me:
  • Space
  • Privacy
  • Structure
But my high-rise home gives me:
  • Energy
  • Perspective
  • Inspiration
I didn’t lose productivity by downsizing.
I gained momentum.
This aligns closely with what I explore in The Elegant Guide to Vertical Living—how condos and high-rise apartments aren’t compromises, but conscious lifestyle upgrades when designed intentionally.

The Hidden Luxury of Working With a View

Luxury isn’t just marble countertops or oversized rooms.
Sometimes, luxury is:
  • Watching snow fall from above while working quietly
  • Seeing the city wake up as you sip morning coffee
  • Writing at night while lights shimmer outside your window
A view becomes a silent collaborator in your workday.
It asks nothing.
It distracts without overwhelming.
It reminds you that the world is larger than the task at hand.

Take Away: Designing for Energy, Not Just Function

Working from home isn’t just about having a desk—it’s about creating an environment that supports how you think.
For me, high-rise living transformed my relationship with work. The light, the view, the elevation, the intentional lighting at night—all of it feeds my creativity in ways a traditional setup never did.
If you’re designing a work-from-home space, don’t just ask:
  • “Do I have enough room?”
Ask instead:
  • “Does this space give me energy?”
  • “Does it support how I create?”
  • “Does it allow me to think clearly?”
Sometimes, the most powerful upgrade isn’t more space.
It’s a better view.
