The Three Most Important Investments You’ll Ever Make (Hint: They’re Not Financial)
Suppose you clicked on this article thinking that it is about real estate or stock market investment; you can stop reading because I am not going to talk about money investments in this article. In that case, This article is about something more valuable than money. When I reflect on what matters most, the answer is always clear: the best investments in life are not found in markets or material possessions. They’re our investments in wellbeing, families, and growth as individuals. Over the years, I’ve realized that prioritizing these three areas—your health, your children’s education, and your ongoing personal growth—creates a solid foundation for an abundant and meaningful life.
1. Invest in Your Health: The True Foundation of Wellbeing
I love this quote by A.G. Riddle: “A healthy person has a hundred wishes, but a sick person has only one.” Our health is the most underrated yet crucial investment we can make. It’s easy to overlook until we’re forced to confront its absence; ask people with significant health scares. I’ve learned that everything else—our ambitions, relationships, and ability to care for others—depends on how well we care for ourselves.
Investing in health means making daily, consistent, intentional, and educated choices: focusing on nutritious meals, regular movement, deep rest (the most overlooked part of our health), and nurturing our emotional wellbeing. Invest in educating yourself about nutrition, spend money on healthy and nutritious ingredients, and make this part of your lifestyle. Small habits, practiced over time, create powerful change.
Taking care of your health is the ultimate act of self-respect and the foundation of every other investment.
2. Invest in Your Children’s Education: Planting Seeds for the Future
Few responsibilities are as meaningful for parents as nurturing and educating our children. The second best investment you can make is in your children’s education and holistic development. Before you argue why I considered our own health before our children’s wellbeing, let me explain that we can’t fully be present and take care of our children when we are not healthy. As a result, we see so many children growing up in unhealthy (physically and emotionally) homes. Just as we invest in our health, we are responsible for creating an environment where our children can grow and thrive. Kids learn from what we do, not what we ask them to do, so by practicing a healthy lifestyle, we are teaching them to create one.
With my son Krish, I’ve paid close attention to his wellbeing—from what he eats to how he learns and the emotional support he receives at home. I cannot control what happens, but I can give him a solid foundation to deal with whatever the future brings him. Choosing a high-quality private school was a conscious decision to give him a strong academic foundation and surround him with opportunities to explore, question, and grow. But education goes beyond academics—it includes teaching healthy habits, fostering emotional intelligence, and modeling lifelong curiosity. Investing your time, money, and energy in your kid’s growth is your second-best investment.
3. Invest in Your Ongoing Personal Growth: For lifelong ROI
Personal growth is an investment that pays dividends throughout life. Regardless of age or stage, continuously learning and expanding our minds keeps us agile, inspired, and resilient. It’s not just a nice-to-have; it’s essential for brain health and longevity.
I make it a point to engage in ongoing learning—taking online courses, reading nonfiction books, exploring new topics, and staying curious about the world around me. Every new skill or insight adds depth and richness to my life, helping me grow as a person and a parent.
Investing in personal growth fuels your mind, sense of purpose, and wellbeing. Learning is easy today, with everything available online.
To prioritize what matters, start a simple journaling habit. Taking a few quiet minutes each day or week to write down your priorities and plans can help you clarify your values and guide your daily actions. Reflection turns intention into reality and keeps your most important investments at the forefront of your life. Do not wait for your body to remind you that you need to take care of your health.
Wherever you are on your journey, remember that the best investments you can make are in your health, your children’s future, and your ongoing growth. Each step you take compounds over time, shaping a legacy far beyond financial wealth.
