Style vs. Fashion: Understanding the Key DifferencesIntroduction

When it comes to the world of fashion and self-expression, two terms often come up: style and fashion. While many people use these terms interchangeably, they actually represent different concepts. In this article, we will explore the difference and overlap between style and fashion.

Defining Fashion

Fashion refers to the trends in clothing, accessories, and overall aesthetics that dominate a culture at a particular time, mostly in two seasons; Spring and Fall in the fashion industry. It is often driven by designers, influencers, and the latest runway shows. Fashion is dynamic and ever-changing—what’s in vogue today may be considered outdated tomorrow. It revolves around collective opinions and what the mass perceives as current.

Understanding Style

On the other hand, style is more personal and individualistic. While fashion focuses on trends and public sentiment, style is about how we choose to express ourselves through clothing, accessories and lifestyle. It is a unique blend of personality, comfort, and flair. Someone may choose to follow fashion trends, but true style reflects the individual’s taste, preferences, and confidence.

Key Differences Between Style and Fashion

Now that we have a basic understanding of what fashion and style mean, let’s delve into their key differences:

  • Longevity: Fashion is transient, changing with the seasons and the whims of the industry. Style, conversely, is consistent and timeless, often staying true to a person’s unique identity.
  • Origin: Fashion originates from designers and influencers, while style comes straight from the individual. Your style represents a personal expression that cannot be dictated by others.
  • Pursuit: Many people chase fashion trends, hoping to fit in or be seen as stylish. In contrast, cultivating a personal style often leads to a more authentic and fulfilling sense of self.
  • Investment: Accessories and garments considered fashionable may require significant financial investment, but personal style often thrives on creativity—finding ways to mix, match, and reinvent pieces irrespective of brand value. You can chose to invest in accessories that your style and last much longer than fashion trends. My favourites are classic designer bags, signature jewelry and high quality wool coats.

For instance, a person might wear the latest designer outfit (fashion) but remain uncomfortable in it, while another might wear a simple combination of classy timeless items that truly reflects who they are (style). This doesn’t mean you should avoid trends, this means you should pick trends that fit your style. Example: If green is trending for the season but not your style, you should avoid it.

Ultimately, both fashion and style have their own merits and roles to play in our lives. Understanding the difference enables us to make conscious decisions about how we present ourselves. While it can be fun to embrace fashion trends, remember that cultivating your personal style is the foundation of true self-expression. So, next time you choose an outfit, ask yourself: is this fashion, or is this my style? Ideally, you want fashion that represents your style for that given time period with you want to follow trends. I have my own style but I am not afraid to mix and match my style and latest trends to create refreshing looks. Currently I am all about satin skirts but I will blend them in with my longs coats and high heel boots which is my personal style.
