A Designer’s Love Affair With London: Why I Love This City

London, the Fashion Capital:

I have been traveling to London since 2005, often three or four times a year, in my early career as a fashion designer. Each trip was part work, part inspiration. For me, London wasn’t just another stop on the map — it was a living, breathing classroom of style and culture.

The first time I walked down famous Oxford Street, I realized why this city has become a fashion capital. From the overwhelming yet easy-to-shop energy of Primark to high-street brands like River Island and NEXT, to the refined elegance of Regent Street’s luxury flagships, London spoke to me in color, fabric, and detail. One stroll on Oxford and Regent streets gave me the entire color story of the season. I didn’t need forecasting charts — the well-merchandised window and the streets of London were the forecast.

Unlike North America, where casual wear often dominates, Londoners express themselves through polished ensembles, bold accessories, and confident silhouettes. And it’s not about labels alone. It’s about style as a way of life.

Oxford and Regent Streets — where fashion, architecture, and history meet.

For anyone passionate about fashion, Oxford Street is a must. You can start at Primark, then make your way past River Island, NEXT, Zara, Mango, and Selfridges, before arriving at Regent Street, home to luxury houses and designer boutiques. Oh, and the multi-level Nike store is a must-visit store.

It’s not just shopping. It’s an education in how fashion lives in everyday culture. Watching locals pair heritage trench coats with modern trainers, or tourists discovering London-based designers, reminds you that this city thrives on a blend of traditional and modern fashionable culture.

The Cultural Side of London

But London isn’t only about fashion. It’s a city layered with history, heritage, and culture. On one of my trips, I took the open-top bus tour — the most charming way to see the city’s landmarks. From Buckingham Palace to Tower Bridge, you feel like you’re flipping through the pages of a living history book or watching an old movie with stunning backgrounds.

The mix is what makes London unique: centuries-old architecture standing alongside modern glass towers, Michelin-starred restaurants just around the corner from cozy pubs, and fashion markets hidden just steps away from stately museums.

London’s timeless dining culture — elegance served with conversation.

A day of exploring Oxford Street isn’t complete without stopping at one of its hidden cafés or restaurants in the alley. These restaurants are packed with people enjoying authentic food from all over the world. I keep going back to excellent Lebanese, Italian, and Indian food restaurants in these places. The dining scene reflects the same mix as the fashion: accessible, diverse, and distinctly London.
