Is Your Home Missing the Elements of Balance? How I Use Decor to Harmonize Energy Year-Round
When people ask me how I decorate my home, the truth is, I don’t start with trends or color palettes — they come after. I start with energy.
As someone who’s practiced Feng Shui for over 15 years and also loves a modern, elegant space, my approach to styling is rooted in a quiet balance of elements. I want my home to feel warm in winter, cool in summer, and grounded all year round — not just in temperature, but in spirit.
So I decorate with intention. And every choice—whether it’s a marble table or a cluster of green plants by the window—is part of a bigger picture: bringing the five elements of Feng Shui into harmony.
The Energy Behind My Aesthetic
I live in a really cold climate (Canada), where we have snow for a few months a year. The temperature can drop below -20 degrees during those months, making warmth more than just comfort — it’s an energetic necessity. That’s why I’m drawn to brass, gold, and warm wood tones. These materials aren’t just beautiful. They activate the fire and earth elements that I often need more of during the long, grey seasons.
But I don’t stop there.
Let me take you inside the elements I decorate with — and how they work together in my space:
🌱 Wood – Growth, Vitality, Life
I bring this in through warm wooden furniture, carved wooden trays, and even the legs of my dining chairs I selected in gorgeous brown wood. Wood creates energy but also keeps it ideal — perfect for spaces that crave movement and motivation.
🪞 Metal – Clarity, Focus, Strength
I adore gold and brass. They shimmer just enough to reflect light, and they bring a sense of sophistication without being cold. Paired with white or marble surfaces, they offer both power and peace. Metal keeps me focused — and it’s everywhere, from my cabinet handles to mirror frames to planting pots.

🌊 Water – Flow, Ease, Wisdom
While I don’t have a water fountain in my home, I do use mirrors as stand-ins. Mirrors in Feng Shui often carry the energy of water, and I have them in almost every room — entryway, bedroom, and kitchen. Mirrors reflect beautiful light in the morning, increase energy in the evening, and create natural movement where spaces might feel stagnant without any effort. One mirror in my living room even catches morning sunlight and bounces it straight onto my plants. It’s magical.
🔥 Fire – Passion, Visibility, Warmth
In colder months, I bring in the fire element subtly: gold accents, candles, textured throws in rich tones. But I avoid overdoing it. Fire should spark — not create overwhelming or chaotic energy. For natural warmth, I let the sunlight be the fire. I open the blinds early, let light pour in, and let it dance across my marble counters. This works for me in summer and winter because even on colder days, we have bright sun during most mornings.
🪨 Earth – Stability, Nourishment, Grounding
Marble is my go-to here. Its fabulous, weighty presence brings elegance but also a beautiful grounding force. I especially love it in my kitchen and bathrooms — places where I want calm clarity. Stone, ceramics, and planters also echo this energy.

How I Know It’s Working
Sometimes, when something feels off in my home — like the mood is heavier or a room feels “stuck” — I don’t rush to redecorate. I ask myself: what’s missing?
Is there too much cold metal and not enough warmth in the room? Are my mirrors reflecting chaos? Are my plants getting enough light or getting too cold in winter? Often, I’ll find one element overpowering the rest of the space. And all I have to do is make a simple shift: adding a plant, lighting a candle, moving a mirror, or swapping a cushion on the sofa. It’s subtle, but powerful.
This way of decorating is about presence and intention.

Takeaway
The magic of Feng Shui is in cultivating awareness. When you learn to tune into your home and recognize when you feel balanced in your space, it starts to take care of you. And for me, that’s the real definition of luxury.
Aren’t good health and peace a big part of modern luxury?
So yes, my mirrors are intentional. My plants are bathed in morning sunlight. My marble is not just pretty — it’s purposeful. And every piece of decor is a quiet, elegant contributor to the energetic conversation happening in my home every single day.
