The Sleep-Stress Dilemma: What Came First, the Sleepless Night or the Stress?

Our body sees lack of sleep as stress and triggers the stress hormone cortisol. At the same time, stress prevents us from sleeping, creating a frustrating loop that feels impossible to escape.

It’s the classic chicken or the egg debate, which one came first?—but in this case, both the sleepless night and the stress hatch from the same chaotic nest! The more exhausted we are, the more stressed we feel, and the more stressed we feel, the harder it becomes to fall asleep. So how do we break free?

How Lack of Sleep Fuels Stress

When we skimp on sleep, the effects ripple through every aspect of our lives—our minds feel foggy, our emotions run high, and our patience wears thin. Research consistently highlights this bidirectional relationship, where stress sabotages our sleep, and sleep deprivation intensifies stress.

How to Break the Cycle and Sleep More Peacefully

Thankfully, there are ways to outsmart the cycle and reclaim restful nights:

  • Create a Soothing Sleep Routine—Treat bedtime like a VIP event. Dim the lights, power down screens, and replace late-night scrolling with a warm cup of tea, a few pages of a good book, or mind-soothing podcast listening.
  • Reduce the Stress Before Bed – Deep breathing or gentle stretching can signal to your nervous system that it’s safe to relax. The more we ease tension before bed, the less likely it is to follow us into sleep.
  • Move Your Body, Calm Your Mind—Regular physical activity improves sleep and releases endorphins that naturally lower stress. A quick walk, yoga, or light workout can make a difference.
  • My favourite is Laugh to relieve stress. Humor is a natural stress reliever. Sometimes, the best way to loosen stress’s grip is to laugh, if I chose to scroll through my phone at the end of the day, I prefer to watch funny videos, it really helps.

At the end of the day, prioritizing sleep and stress management is necessary to maintain good health. By making mindful changes, we can stop this never-ending loop and finally wake up feeling refreshed, a well-rested, thriving version of ourselves.
